Atherosclerosis is a condition in which arteries and veins around the body become 'clogged' by fatty substances known as 'plaques' or 'atheroma'. This causes the affected arteries to harden and narrow, restricting the blood flow. This can lead to damage to organs and even cause them to not function properly. Atherosclerosis can also cause blood clots, which is capable of triggering heart attacks and strokes, and can lead to peripheral arterial disease and coronary heart disease.
What are the causes of atherosclerosis?
How is it treated? Treatment aims primarily at slowing the progress of the condition and preventing it from causing much further harm. Surgery may be required in some extreme cases but usually a lifestyle change coupled with ACE inhibitors (for high blood pressure and to lower cholesterol levels) is enough. Red meats and atherosclerosis Stanley Hazen at the cleveland clinic lerner research institute in Ohio did extensive research into whether or not the consumption of red meat had any correlation with atherosclerosis. They fed 2 different groups of mice red meats; one control group and another with suppressed gut flora. They found that the mice with suppressed gut flora had lower rates of atherosclerosis, whereas the group with normal amounts had a higher incidence rate.
