Cholera is the infection of the small intestine, caused by some strains of the bacterium vibrio cholerae. Classic symptoms range from diarrhea and vomiting to muscle cramps. One of the most widely used tretments is oral rehydration therapy, in which fluids lost from the infection are replaced with slightly sweet and salty solutions. Cholera affects an estimated 3-5 million people all over the world, and in 2010 was responsible for up to 130,000 deaths.
Being able to isolate vibrio cholerae is vital in order to study it and identify it in people. In order to do this, you must use a selective agar culture plate called Thiosulfate-citrate-bile salts-sucrose agar (TCBS). The seperate components of this agar medium inhibit the growth of unwanted bacterium. For example, Sodium Thiosulfate and Sodium Citrate are present in order to ensure that Enterobacteriaceae is unable to survive in the medium. When you culture the cholerae, it should show up as a vibrant yellow on the dish, much like on this picture taken from www.medical-labs.net;
